Thank you for being a considerate steward of the land at Camp Wild Fern

ABOUT THE LAND

About the land

Is there anything else you would like to know about?

  • We bought this land about 6 years ago and it was clear cut about 12 years before our purchase. Our main goal is to rehab this property to bring it to its former glory. It was an overgrown mess when we bought it and have done tons of work thanks to the campers and visitors who come to stay with us. Your visit helps us get closer and closer to our goal of creating a healthy forest, that we can share with others.

  • This property is in beautiful Southern Oregon, 10 miles North or Shady Cove and 7 miles short of Prospect, Oregon. Less than a mile from Lake with fishing access, 50 miles from Crater Lake, 70 miles from the most beautiful natural hot spring in the state, Umpqua Hot Springs.

  • There are alot of quirks about staying with us. Our composting toilet is unique, it is situated outside 100% and has a urine Separator on it to keep the smell at bay. Our outdoor shower runs on a battery powered pump and can offer a cool breeze in places you would rather not get a cool breeze :) The main area for camping was recently mulched of all the overgrown brush and that mulch is in the process of breaking down into great nutrients for the trees. The area is pretty open and privacy is not very easy to attain within your campsite unless you wander into the forest a bit. (If there are other campers on site). But there is a privacy fence around the shower and the toilet is off into the woods, where the trees provide lots of privacy. Summers can get hot, dusty and mosquitos do like to hang out, since the lake is only about 1/2 mile from our property. But don't let any of this keep you away as it has beauty that you  are not likely to find elsewhere. The birds have a large choir time in the morning and it is the most wonderful way to awake to and drink your coffee.

  • Shady cove (11 miles south) has a grocery store, gas stations and a few restaurants. Shady cove also has rentals to raft the river in summer and lots of guided or fishing opportunities. Shady cove can be pricey, so fill your gas tank before you arrive and hit the grocery store in a larger town nearby. Shady cove is great if you forget something.

  • There is a walking trail that leads up the north side of the property that opens up to a view of Lost Creek Lake. There are all the essentials you need to be comfortable but not too much that you forget to take in all the peacefulness and slow down a bit. Lost creek Lake is wonderful to swim in during the hottest parts of the month. The Rogue River is nearby and the put in is only about 2 miles from the property. If you do not have your own boat there are rentals in Shady Cove, about 11 miles south. It is a nice and easy float that you can see eagles, osprey and maybe even a river otter. Crater Lake is about 50 miles North of the property. Umpqua Hot springs is about an hour and a half away. We are also just an hour from  Diamond Lake, Lemolo Lake, Mt Theilson, and tons of water falls. This area is brimming with beauty.

  • Remember we live very primitively. So be prepared to wake up to birds chirping and outside bathrooms. Be prepared to hear rustling, the wild life is very abundant here, especially the smaller critters. Take good care to keep your food put up inside your car at all times unless you are cooking. We have not had many issues with the wildlife and would like to keep it that way. Occasionally we see squirrels, skunks, quail, wild birds, wood rats and mice. Even more rarely deer, foxes and coyote. We have not yet to spot cougars, or elk but we know they are there at some points.  We have had yearly sightings of black bears and want to keep campers and wildlife safe. So please keep food in the car. Come setup your tent and enjoy a weekend away from the bustle of city life and get a small taste of off grid living. Being off grid we ask that visitors arrive before dark, at least 1 hour. Also, when fire season is in effect, no fires are allowed until further notice.

  3. If you are bringing your own cooking stove, you can use it, but must use on the gravel.

  6. We are here to be stewards of land and ask that you will treat it with as much respect as we do.

  8. Mosquitos can be pesky at sun up and sun down in the summer time, since we are near the lake, please bring bug spray or long sleeves

  9. Please clean up the kitchen behind yourself as it is a shared space.

  10. Please be respectful of other campers on the property, this is a place of peace and acceptance of all human/animal/plant life.
